Thursday Ladies Club and Thursday Ladies Charitable Trust, Besant Nagar celebrated International Women’s Day on Mar.7 at Youth Hostel, Indira Nagar and made donations to 11 organisations. The club can be contacted at 91769 12514, 96001 67913. The organisations are:

  • Akshaya Trust: They take care of 225 destitute senior citizens.
  • ROA Shelter: This shelter takes care of abandoned, sick, injured and aged animals. Founder Dinesh Baba, has been rescuing animals in distress since 2019 and has rescued more than 5000 animals. 
  • Danirasa Foundation: it is a rehabilitation centre for women and has projects that aim to improve the standard of rural marginalised families by providing them with jobs and building their homes. They also operate a community kitchen and tailoring unit. 
  • Gowrin Charitable Trust: it is a non-profit organisation that provides academic, pre-vocational and different types of therapies for students with special needs.
  • Harijan Sevak Sangh: It was founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1932, to eradicate untouchability in India. It works for the welfare of Harijans.
  • Haemophilia Society (Madras Chapter): Their vision is haemophilia without disability, children free of pain, one country and one treatment.
  • Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust: They help patients with physical and psychological problems when they undergo treatment for illnesses.
  • Meenakshi Academy of Higher Education and Research: Their vision is to build a world-class institution, transforming society through value-based programmes and healthcare advancements.
  • Aashraya: it is a home for a short stay for women in distress. Destitute women above 18 years, single and married women with children are admitted here. An effort is made to counsel them, become self-reliant and then integrate them into society. 
  • Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Sankara Medical Trust: This trust provides free treatment to the poorest section of the society. They collect only Rs.5 for consultation. They also periodically conduct medical camps for the slum dwellers, school children, elderly, orphans and juvenile home residents.
  • Uravugal Trust: Khalid Ahamed, founder of Uravugal Trust in 2017 and has been doing funeral rites and burial of the unknown homeless, with the permission of the police. So far the trust has performed cremations of more than 6000 bodies. “Not just life, death deserves some dignity too with the same core aspect,” they believe.

Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
