Republic Day – 2024 in the neighbourhood

Republic Day was celebrated with much zest in the neighbourhood. Here is a sneak peek into the celebrations:


Celebrations at Shanti Colony

Shanti Colony Apex Association celebrated Republic Day with association President Shiva Kumar unfurling the flag. It was followed by a speech competition for kids and a quiz about Republic Day. Prizes were distributed by President Shiva Kumar, Secretary Jayachandran and Treasurer Pitchai.

In the evening, the association organised cultural programmes for the children. Surya School of Music (Velachery) for differently-abled kids, presented songs and thrilled the audience. It was followed by a magic show. Subsequently, the children of the apartments showcased their talents and performed in a group dance and dress competition. The function ended with Tambola.


Republic Day at Sri Sankara School

Sri Sankara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, celebrated Republic Day, with alumni Jyothi Basu, Mr Rogeeswaran and Ms Ramya as the chief guests of the event. The school also conducted their 40th Sports Day and the Literary Association Valedictory function on the occasion. 

The highlights of the celebrations included performances like speeches, group songs and dances focussing on patriotism. The chief guests inspired the students with their motivating words emphasising discipline, hard work and good health. March past, Olympic torch lighting and prize distribution for sports events’ winners marked the Sports Day celebration. The school campus vibrated with an aura of positivity and patriotism.


Republic Day celebration at KV IIT

The 75th Republic Day was celebrated at Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Chennai on Jan.26 with great patriotic fervour. Chief guest H Anantharaman, IRSE, Deputy Chief Vigilance Officer (Engineering) Southern Railway unfurled the national flag. This was followed by the singing of the national anthem and flag song, which marked the start of the celebration. R.N.Sendhil Kumar, Principal, KV IIT Chennai welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of the occasion.

The group dance by the primary students added spark and colour to the day. The patriotic song ‘Hum Honge Kamyab’ by the tiny tots of Balvatika and ‘Chalo Jawan’ by the students of the secondary school expressed their pride and love for the motherland. Speech in English by Jeana Josh of class 5 and Mithran Raj of Balavatika 3, and speech in Hindi by Madhav A Mohan captured the importance of the day in a nutshell. The mime by the senior secondary students on Unsung hero Tiruppur Kumaran also known as ‘Kodi Kaatha Kumaran’ captivated the audience and depicted his heroic tale. The group dance by the students of secondary and the display of martial arts – Silambam and Yoga asanas portrayed the talents of the students. 

The chief guest released the Vidyalaya newsletter and the first copy was received by Headmistress R.Padmavathi. He also gave away prizes to the winners of the various CCA competitions of primary and regional levels. In his speech, he insisted that the youth of the nation have a bigger role to play and asked everyone present to reiterate their commitment towards the nation. The programme came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by D.Sreelatha, CCA In-charge. A blood donation camp was organised in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Parents and staff volunteered for the noble cause.


Republic day at Kidzee

The Republic Day festivities at Kidzee Preschool’s Kannappa Nagar and Valmiki Nagar branches began with a warm welcome speech, followed by flag hoisting, a march past, and the singing of the national anthem, infusing the celebration with patriotic spirit. K.Sekkizhar, Director of a Singapore-based IT company, was the guest of honour.

“Differing from conventional celebrations, our little ones took centre stage to portray the historical events of Republic Day, providing a detailed representation of how the constitution was framed. From dramatising the initial discussions to depicting the signing of the constitution, the children brought this pivotal journey to life. Notably, the enactment featured Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first president of Independent India, as the first signatory, and Mr. Feroz Gandhi as the last, portraying this significant moment in an adorable manner,” said the preschool.

The celebrations also included tiny tots dressed in costumes representing different states of India, offering a wonderful lesson on the country’s unity in diversity. The preschool also felicitated the winners of the Pongal rangoli competition.


Republic Day at Avvai Home

On Jan.26, this year, there was a display of various skills by children of all age groups, at Avvai Home and Orphanage, starting from March past by the school band to well-coordinated Yoga by a group of girls who performed intricate asanas, leaving the spectators astonished. Girls showcased Silambattam with great dexterity. The audience watched with anxiety and applauded when Karate student S.Sweety smashed burning bricks to smithereens, and 5-year-old S.Tharun exhibited his huge collection of medals and trophies won. Children put up dance and music performances and gave speeches on India and Republic Day. The entire event was compered flawlessly by the girls. 

It was also the school’s Annual Sports Day and many students starting from primary school to class 12th walked up to the dais with pride, to receive medals, cups and trophies for inter and intra-school sports events.


Republic day at Kidzee

Other celebrations in the neighbourhood

The Republic Day was celebrated in Journalist Colony, Thiruvanmiyur at their park. The association’s EC member Mrs Rajalakshmi unfurled the national flag. Children’s events were conducted by Padmaja Parthepan; Padma Babuji conducted a children’s parade. Children who have won in various competitions were given prizes; Conservancy workers and guards were honoured with gifts. Association President Babuji, Secretary Jeyaram, Treasurer Asokkumar and Ex-secretary K.Gunasekar participated.

Renowned cinematographer was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations at Sivagamipuram 1st Street. President Mr Dayanidhi, Secretary Mr Pandian, Treasurer Ms Annapoorana, Committee members and residents attended the event.

Coronet Gardens, Kannappa Nagar Extension, Thiruvanmiyur celebrated Republic Day with Dr Jagadish (Founder-Trustee of Turiya Palliative Elders Care) unfurling the flag. He appreciated the improvements made in the colony, especially regarding rainwater harvesting. L.Muralidharan, Secretary and President Mr Sundaresan also attended.

Republic Day celebrations at Chithkala Nursery and Primary School, Indira Nagar.

The residents of Deccan Enclave, Vannanthurai, celebrated Republic Day with resident S.Rajaram unfurling the national flag.

Pasumai Murthy and other residents of Vannanthurai celebrated Republic Day with Vanaja Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Women’s Indian Association. The team distributed stationery items – books, pencils and geometry boxes to 50 primary school children. Fifty Tulsi plants were also distributed.

K.R.Kathirmurugan, Councillor of Ward 170, celebrated Republic Day with the students of Chennai High School, Kottur. He unfurled the national flag and appreciated the cultural programme presented by the students.

 The residents of Kakkan Colony, Besant Nagar celebrated Republic Day with passion. The National Anthem was cheerfully rendered by the children. The flag was hoisted by N.S.Venkataraman, Trustee of Nandini Voice For the Deprived. It was announced that Nandini Voice For the Deprived would award cash prizes to three students residing in Kakkan Colony, studying in Std. 10 and 12, who would score the highest marks in the forthcoming Board examinations.

Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
